Month: December 2012

Party time: I have been searching through my wardrobe for a semi-formal semi-sprezz fit for New Year’s Eve like this one, copied off some Tumblr posts I saw. Thanks all you #menswear people!

Hartwood Caruso-made velvet SC thrifted on eBay. Smalto flannel PoW trousers, bottom half of a suit.

Boggi unlined SC & cashmere V-neck. Brooks Brothers non-iron OCBD. Ascot of unrecalled origin. Silk ps thrifted at Simon’s. Atelson brown millerighe trousers. Lavender Finsbury socks. John Lobb suede oxfords thrifted on

Special bonus (not-featured), for the next 48 hours only: Clark Gable mustache.

Over Christmas holiday, I’ve been reading lots of Blake & Mortimer to my sons, educating their sartorial eye through bande dessinée. It strikes me that Edgar P. Jacobs often liked to draw characters who don bow ties with their DB’s, hence the bow tie and DB blazer fit today, for my eldest son’s birthday.

Albert Arts shirt and flannel DB blazer with crested buttons from the Traveller’s Club Paris. Brooks Brothers bow tie — Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders Repp tie pattern. Drake’s ps. Gambler RTW soft cavalry twill trousers with cavalry pockets. JM Weston suede bucks thrifted on eBay. Red socks by Bowen.

Today’s challenge: using typical blue suit trousers to create an odd jacket fit that works, without conjuring up the image of an orphan suit. Secondary challenge: using gray on top, without it also looking like an orphan suit.

Corneliani cashmere herringbone SC. Smuggler trousers (lower half of a navy business suit made in VBC S120’s). Van Laack bold gingham shirt. Boggi thinly knit tie. Comptoir des Chemisiers ps. Finsbury derbies.

This is how I plan to recycle the trousers from an old Smuggler suit I no longer wear.
